Hardneck v Softneck Garlic
Hardneck varieties produce a scape and still has the ability to produce a flower head, although these don’t produce viable seeds.
Softneck doesn’t produce the hard stems and won’t have a flowering head. It’s this category which is better if you want to produce an attractive plait of garlic.
When do you plant garlic and how deep?
A few weeks before planting scatter two handfuls of Sulphate of Potash into the ground and mix in. Another scattering can be done when the soil warms up in Spring.
Autumn planting varieties are planted throughout October and November and in a mild year even into December. Whether hardneck or softneck the bulb must be planted deep in the soil, at least double the depth of the bulb – similar to the way daffodil bulbs are planted. Spring planting varieties are planted January and February.
When is garlic harvested?
Start harvesting in May for your Autumn planted varieties and June and July for Spring planted varieties. The leaves will turn yellow and start too die back. Lift with a fork, do no pull the stem as this will damage the bulb and make storing it for a long period of time less viable.
Is Elephant Garlic a true garlic?
These should be planted in September. Elephant Garlic is not a true garlic, in fact it’s a member of the Leek family.
What to do about rust on garlic?
Rust on garlic is spread by air borne particles so remove the leaves and destroy them as soon as you find rust. Talk to local gardeners to find out whether rust is in the area. At the moment there is nothing in the garden centre which can help you. Keep your garlic patch as healthy as possible. Elephant Garlic never suffers from rust. The hardneck varieties tend to be a bit more rust resistant.
Does garlic need watering over winter?
Unless we are having a dry winter there is no need to add extra water to your garlic crop. Keep an eye on your crop at the start of Spring when the weather improves as you will need to start watering your crop like any other plant.
Do you plant the full bulb or each clove?
Break the bulb so the cloves are released but plant within 24 hours of breaking the bulb apart. Each clove will have a tip and flat end, the tip needs to point upwards when planting. Each clove will develop into a full bulb with several cloves.
Can you grow garlic in the shade?
Garlic loves the sun and likes to be in well drained soil.
Can you plant shop bought garlic in the garden?
If you buy garlic in the supermarket and plant this in the garden you won’t know whether you are transferring any disease to your plot. You should always buy virus free garlic from a reputable seller such as seed catalogues or local garden centres.
